ND: fewest kids impacted by mortgage crisis

Research by the Annie E. Casey Foundation on child poverty found that ND has the fewest children affected by the mortgage crisis; ND also has the least number of children living with at least one unemployed parent.


ACT scores hold steady

ND students had an average ACT score of 21.5, the same as in 2009. The national average is 21. ACT measures a students's ability to handle college classes in English, math, reading and science; 24% of ND students met all four benchmarks.

Bismarck one of 12 cleanest cities

Bismarck and Fargo made the national list as two of the top 12 cleanest metro areas in the U.S. in terms of air quality. Forbes magazine cites the state's clean air program, which encourages the use of ethanol, biodiesel, mass transit, and advances in generating electricity.


ND ranked 3rd on U.S. well-being index

ND ranked third behind WY, then Hawaii on the Gallup-Healthwise Well-Being Index 2010. Factors include present life situation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors, and basic access to life's necessities.

Nationally, 18.9% of Americans were underemployed in 2010; only 2 states had less than 12% underemployment--North Dakota and Wyoming.

A significant presence of natural resources-based industries was a distinct job-creation advantage for states like ND, VA, OK and TX, which were among the top 10 job markets in 2010, 2009 and 2008.

ND students do well on U.S. science test

ND was among the best in the nation in science testing in grades 4 and 8. North Dakota students had an average score of 162 compared with the national average of 149 on the NAEP exam. ND 8th graders tied with Montana and Department of Defense schools for the nation's top scores.


Bismarck ranks high on security

Bismarck made the list as the 4th most secure small city in the U.S., according to Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, which ranks factors such as crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, environmental hazards, job loss and life expectancy.

Forbes magazine recently ranked Bismarck 4th in its top small locations (fewer than 245,000 people) to do business, based on business and living costs, job growth, income growth, educational attainment, and expected economic growth.

SAT scores above average in ND

The average SAT scores of North Dakota high school students who graduated this year were well above the national average. A perfect score is 800. The average ND student scored 580 in critical reading compared with a national average of 501, and 594 in math compared with 516 as a U.S. average. In the writing section, ND averaged 559 versus 492 nationally. Approximately 4% of ND students take the SAT to get into large out-of-state universities or qualify for national scholarships, while 80% of high school graduates in ND take the more popular ACT.

Bismarck is "Playful City USA"

Bismarck was the only city in N.D. to be recognized by KaBOOM, a national nonprofit group dedicated to saving playtime/recreation for kids.
