Band Handbook (pdf document)
Dear 6th Grade Parents:
This information is in regard to the Bismarck Public Schools 6th grade beginner band camp program. After giving your child the opportunity to try some different band instruments and studying his or her physical features, we as a band staff make a recommendation that your child begin study on an instrument. A letter was sent out with a suggestion of what instrument your child should play.
More information regarding 6th grade band and the process of joining are included in the attached downloadable 6th Grade Band Handbook.

6th Grade Band Starts with Summer Camp
Band classes will start in summer band camp which will be held from August 8-18, 2016 at Simle Middle School, located at 1215 N. 19th Street. This summer band camp is for students finishing their 5th grade year and who are going to be in band in the 6th grade. There is no charge for the camp.
It is our hope that all band students will start their band experience in the two-week summer camp session. There are two ways to register. One is to fill out the registration form provided and give it to your schools' office. The other is to contact the Bismarck Public Schools Fine Arts Department at 323-4082 by June 30, 2016.
Students must do one of the two things in order to begin band in the fall. The first option is to attend summer band camp. If students are not able to attend the summer camp they may take private lessons during the summer. It is recommended that at least 6 lessons be taken during the summer months from the private teacher. Private lessons or summer camp provide many hours of instruction. If students are unable to attend Camp or take Private lessons, please contact the Band Director at your school.
After completing summer band camp or private lessons, students will be prepared to take the regular band class at their school offered 5 times a week during their 6th grade year.
A supply list is listed below for the required items needed to start a band instrument. These will be needed by August 8th, the first day of summer school.

Saxophone and Percussion
Special note to parents: For many years the Bismarck Public School band program has had a problem with too many students signing up for saxophone and percussion. This has led to students quitting and unbalanced bands. If your son or daughter is unsure of which instrument to choose, please help our program by persuading them to pick an instrument other than saxophone or percussion. We especially need low brass players (trombone and baritone) and clarinets.
In the past, many students started percussion or saxophone because it was a "popular instrument". Many "drummers" think percussion is an easy instrument only to find it is one of the most difficult of all the band instruments. These students end up quitting, whereas if they had started a different instrument, they may have continued. Furthermore, we have found balanced bands improve the sound of the band which benefits all students.
Just like a football or basketball team needs a certain number of particular players, our bands need just the right amount of instruments! We hope this policy will help the individual students as well as the band program as a whole.
